9780312088521: Mrs. Malory and the Festival Murder

Even in a small village like Taviscombe, one is bound to have an unpleasant neighbor. For Sheila Malory, the local poet, biographer, and busybody Adrian Palgrove fits the bill. So Sheila is none too pleased to encounter Adrian at a literary lunch, where he smugly relates the news that he's been appointed executor of a well-known author's estate, whose papers, Adrian confides, contain explosive revelations.
Back home at Taviscombe, Sheila unhappily sees still more of Adrian during preparations for the local festival, as Adrian's overbearing manner makes enemies of nearly everyone on the festival planning committee.
But who could have guessed that the first event of the festival was to be Adrian's last? Who disliked the man enough to kill him - and kill again? When the list of likely candidates is nearly as long as the local telephone directory, Sheila Malory has her work cut out for her in Hazel Holt's most ingenious, entertaining new mystery.

About the Author:

Hazel Holt is the author of seven previous Mrs. Malory novels. She was a personal friend and literary advisor to Barbara Pym, and the author of Pym?s official biography. A former television critic and feature writer, she lives in Somerset, England.

From Kirkus Reviews:

A village fˆte, a stately home and its residents, and a literary curmudgeon all figure prominently in the latest adventure of West County author and amateur sleuth Sheila Malory (The Cruellest Month; Mrs. Malory Investigates). When obstreperous Adrian Palgrave, who's unexpectedly been named literary executor of Laurence Meredith's unpublished letters and papers, is murdered on the opening night of the Taviscombe festival, suspects abound- -including poor Robin, the festival treasurer, whom Palgrave humiliated; pregnant Jessie, who was abandoned by him; and Oliver, whose affair Palgrave was about to reveal. Robin then disappears and later surfaces as a suicide, and Palgrave's widow, Enid, announces that she'll now edit the Meredith material--and promptly dies in a suspicious fire. Sheila and her friend's son Roger, a homicide inspector, try to establish a timetable for everyone's movements at the festival, but it's their delving into certain family secrets that finally reveals a (dubious) motive and implicates the guilty. Familiar, cozy fare that entertains right up to the end--when it collapses under a bit of mawkishness. Traditionalists, however, will probably be most forgiving, particularly when they discover the appearance of their favorite murder weapon--the dented candlestick. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP.
