Having won her sexual discrimination suit against Jackson County Medical Center, or "General Jack," Jan has nearly grown accustomed to the practical jokes of the hospital's disgruntled male staff. Her empty promotion to Security's Head of Special Projects, of which there are none, has left her with time on her hands. Still, Jan plugs on - it's all in a day's work.
But when she is called in to face the aftermath of a race riot, only to find that a black hospital guard has been kidnapped, her day's work becomes increasingly complicated. Jan finds herself struggling to se that everything is done to free the missing guard.
Doing constant battle with the wonders of modern medicine, the General Jack mysteries reveal what hospitals must face above and beyond the physical ailments of their patients. A strong dose of humor is a must, given the mixed results. This third installment in the series offers a thoughtful, witty look at one woman's stake in that battle.

Kicked upstairs as head of Special Security Projects at Jackson General Hospital, Jan Gallagher is in the perfect position to take the heat when a gang war between the Sevens and the Golds overflows into General Jack. It starts when a carful of Sevens deposit Rainy Penshorn, a Seven stalwart felled by a Gold bullet, at the hospital ER. Foiled in their attempts to get close enough to Rainy to finish the job, the Golds kidnap security guard Lyle Brown and demand Rainy in return for his release. The FBI refuses the swap on principle; the local cops have neither the interest nor a clue; so it's up to Jan and her friend Felicia Smith, the hospital social worker who's been sharing Lyle's bed and board, to rescue him without stepping on anybody's toes (and that's a lot of toes). The setup sounds like a foolproof guarantee of nail-biting action, but it isn't, mainly because Jan's rescue attempts are so spasmodic, and Bailey's third (Recycled, 1993, etc.) lacks the power to punch up either its mangled action scenes or the rogues' gallery of Sevens and Golds during the few minutes most of them get on stage. Despite good intentions--the street talk is properly edgy, and the racial tension beneath comes through clearly enough--this is, all in all, one glum read. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. After prevailing in a sex discrimination case against Jackson County Hospital, security guard Jan Gallagher has won a promotion to a do-nothing job. Her old skills come in handy, however, in helping the police and the FBI locate a fellow employee kidnapped by members of a local gang during a riot at the hospital. Tense scenes featuaring smart-mouthed hoodlums compete with Jan's dogged attempts to coerce the kidnap victim's girlfriend to help. Realistic dialog, urgent action, and a determined heroine make for an exciting mystery. For all collections.
