About the Author:

Green is Professor of Biblical Studies at the Dominican School of Philosopy and Theology, Berkeley.

From Library Journal:

Green (English, Notre Dame Univ.) examines suffrage activism in England and the autobiographical writings of numerous suffragists, a topic on which she has published previously. Partly a historical and partly a literary critical study, her book is often muddied in focus; chapters on Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes seem to be present more for name recognition than pertinence. Her study is at its best when it zeroes in on the activism and activists of the suffrage movement. Green's valid and convincing but highly theoretical insights about the literature she critiques and the modern period necessitate an academic audience. For more strictly literary analysis, see Maroula Joannou's Ladies, Please Don't Smash These Windows: Women's Writing, Feminist Consciousness, and Social Change, 1918-38 (Berg, 1995). More specifically historical and/or biographical studies include Johanna Alberti's Beyond Suffrage: Feminists in War and Peace, 1914-28 (St. Martin's, 1989) and War of the Women's Social and Political Union (Univ. of Alabama, 1997).?Martha Henn, Birmingham-Southern Coll.
