The "Redneck Riviera," aka the Mississippi coast, provides the sultry setting for Jackpot Bay, the fourth Jack Delmas novel (Massacre Island, etc.) from Martin Hegwood, senior attorney for the secretary of state's office of Mississippi. With a deadly gun battle at the Jackpot Bay casino, a sexy security auditor and a rock concert besieged by fundamentalists, Jack has plenty to straighten out in this fast-paced, hard-edged thriller.

Hegwood's fourth Jack Delmas mystery finds the laid-back protagonist at home in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi--part of the Gulf Coast's Redneck Riviera--matching wits with a (dyed) blonde bombshell named Tara Stocklin. Jack's employer, Bayou Casualty, has sent Tara to investigate why the Jackpot Bay Casino is losing money. Jack's job is to ensure that the casino's owner, the shady Johnnie "the Dime" Koscko, cooperates with the investigation. Complicating this seemingly simple task are many factors, including Tara's unsubtle attempts to get Jack into bed, a battle between the gay floor manager Rulon Hornbeck and Johnnie's redneck nephew Clyde, and much more. When Rulon and a large sum of money go missing, Jack is hot on the trail. As senior attorney in the Mississippi secretary of state's office, Hegwood knows his stuff--and it shows. Although the plot bogs down with complications and implausibilities toward the end, Hegwood's descriptions of Gulf Coast towns are so dead-on and his characters so well drawn that readers will forgive the less-than-satisfying conclusion. A shifty, bull-headed guy with Mafia connections in Vegas opens his own casino in Biloxi, MS. P.I. Jack Delmas (Massacre Island), hired by the casino's insurance company to facilitate a smooth audit, witnesses a shootout in the casino that leaves one man dead. The assailant, the casino owner's nephew, could be charged with murder-and is probably the reason the casino is losing money. After a controversial rock band's cash payment disappears, Jack and sexy auditor Tara need to clear things up before heads roll. Wry humor, high adventure, one tawdry gambling establishment, and a lot of fun make this highly recommended for series fans and readers who enjoy mysteries with colorful regional settings.
