Levy has been acquainted with Sophia Loren for years, and his biography is the first to appear since her brief jail term (for income-tax evasion) and the deterioration of her marriage with Carlo Ponti. Unfortunately, Levy's attitude toward Loren is that of a lovestruck adolescent. Indeed, the reader is likely to squirm sometimes in embarrassment at the author's expressions of adoration for his subject. Levy's book has extensive quotes from Loren, but nothing of great import not included in the other two biographies of the actress. The best of a mediocre lot is A.E. Hotchner's Sophia Living and Loving: her own story ( LJ 3/15/79). John Smothers, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Freehold, N.J.
