When an Edinburgh surgeon develops the ability to cure cancer with a single touch, his gift disrupts his quietly ordered life and touches off a struggle between the worlds of Indian mysticism and Western medical science.

To a pragmatist like Alastair Kingsley, surgery is a science, so when dishevelled Indian mystic Acharya Dhangi identifies Kingsley as the messiah of his ancient Hindu sect, and claims to have empowered him with the healing touch, Kingsley dismisses him as a harmless crank. But evidence is already emerging that defies even Kingsley's practised scepticism: three of his patients exhibit a phenomenon unknown to medical science: incredibly, their bodies seem to be forming a dramatic resistance to cancer.Kingsley clings to the rational tenets of his training until a personal tragedy allows the seeds of superstition to take root. Plagued by self doubt, he embarks on a desperate manhunt for the now elusive Dhangi, generating a vortex of chaos which threatens to destroy not only his own ordered life but the whole delicate structure of his profession.
