Few were odder than the devoted yet divisive arrangement that joined famed newspaperman Heywood Broun, feminist Ruth Hale, and their small son who grew up?or tried to?in the midst of their progressive circle. "Woodie" was supposed to call his parents by their first names, help entertain their Algonquin Circle, promote socialism and feminism, and be a gentlemanly host at his parents' celebrated parties. For their parts they were supposed to be reasonable, rational, and modern. This prescription was sometimes joyless for them and it did not include a great deal of overt affection for their son either, who, more than anything else, was trying to survive a sickly childhood. It was at one of their great parties that an arch guest asked the prematurely old Heywood Hale Broun, "And whose little boy are you?" Forgetting for a moment to be a gentleman, the child wearily replied, "You know goddamned well whose little boy I am!" thus adding another note to the colorful legend of three people who lived together in the middle of a world best described as stylish amid chaos. As president of the Lucy Stone League, Ruth Hale campaigned hard to get a passport in her own name and proudly declined the Secretary of State's offer of a document to be issued to Mrs. Heywood Broun a/k/a Ruth Hale. She was America's first woman movie critic and a war correspondent in 1917. Yet her own career was subsumed in Heywood's. That crusading newsman conducted one of the most acclaimed columns of the twenties and thirties ("It Seems to Me"), lost his job for a while because of his uncompromising stand on behalf of anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti, ran for Congress as a socialist, and helped found the Newspaper Guild . always working hard to sustain his reputation as the worst dressed man in New York, the famed "unmade bed." Their son, now a successful writer, actor, and broadcaster, looks back on his parents and his unique boyhood with wonder, terror, amusement, love and, at last, forgiveness. Seller Inventory # 003340
