Religion has been associated with terrorism and violence for thousands of years. But is it really religion that "causes" terrorism? The same religious texts and traditions can be used to support peace or violence. Authoritarianism, global power imbalance, invasion and occupation, globalization of the world economy, rapid modernization, and group psychology are the real root causes of religion-based terrorism.
Daniel Price is assistant professor at Westfield State University, MA. He previously has taught at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and Kent State University-Trumbull Campus. His published works include Islamic Political Culture, Democracy, and Human Rights: A Comparative Study.
