9780316012522: Mystery Writers of America Presents The Prosecution Rests: New Stories about Courtrooms, Criminals, and the Law

After the crime is over, the real drama begins. That's what this riveting collection proves as it carries us from the Salem witch trials to Depression-era Chicago to today's highest-stakes legal dramas. These are thrilling stories of lawyers under pressure, of criminals facing the needle, and of the heartbroken families who hope for justice and who sometimes take it into their own hands.

In James Grippando's "Death, Cheated," a lawyer defends his ex-girlfriend against the investors who bet $1.5 million on her death. In Barbara Parker's "A Clerk's Life," a disillusioned clerk at a corporate law firm suspects the worst of his colleagues when one of the firm's employees is murdered. In Phyllis Cohen's "Designer Justice," an accused murderer thinks he's lucked out when he lands a high-priced lawyer, only to learn that there are worse fates than being found guilty.

A page-turning collection--filled with shocking twists, double-crosses, and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

About the Author:

Linda Fairstein led the Sex Crimes Unit of the District Attorney's Office in Manhattan for 25 years. She is the New York Times bestselling author of Killer Heat, Bad Blood, Death Dance, and the 2001 Nero Award Winner The Deadhouse. She lives with her husband in Manhattan and on Martha's Vineyard.

From AudioFile:

Twenty-two courtroom and law-related stories compiled by noted mystery writer Linda Fairstein feature some of the best mystery writers in this country. Some of the works have more twists than a pretzel. The featured writers include Fairstein herself, James Grippando, Barbara Parker, Kate Gallison, Phyllis Cohen, and many more. From the Salem Witch trials to the slick scenes of today, the listener is propelled through a selection of varied courtroom drama and suspense. Cassandra Campbell is the more appealing of the two narrators. Her voice is crisp, friendly, and engaging. Furthermore, she has a broad range of vocal intonations. Paul Boehmer has a light but gruff voice that tends toward monotony. Just when one is about to give up on him, he produces a redeeming bellow or chuckle that keeps one engaged. Despite these few negatives, this compilation will satisfy mystery lovers and fans of legal drama. A.L.H. AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
