Lillian Hellman (1907-1984) became America's best-known and probably most notorious female playwright of the 1930s and 1940s after the enthusiastic response to her first play The Children's Hour, which tells the tale of two schoolteachers whose lives are destroyed after they are accused of being lesbians. The success of her plays made her a natural for the flourishing Hollywood film industry, while her left-leaning political beliefs and world travel placed her in Spain during the Civil War, in Paris and Germany just as fascism began to sweep Europe, and in Moscow and Leningrad during the Second World War. In 1969, Lillian Hellman published the first of three separate collections of her intensely personal, passionate, and painful memoirs, in which she describes her extraordinary life, including her thirty-year love affair with Dashiell Hammett, her close friendship with Dorothy Parker, her Blacklisting during the McCarthy Era, and her refusal to name other people before the House Un-American Activities Committee: "I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions." Lillian Hellman's An Unfinished Woman won the National Book Award, the memoir Julia from Pentimento was made into an Oscar-winning film, and Scoundrel Time became an acclaimed best-seller. Three brings these memoirs together in one volume. Although historical fact is sometimes at odds with Lillian Hellman's memories, she writes with eloquence and grace, recreating the fear, suspicion, and hope of an era. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Suzanne Sowinska
