About the Author

"One February afternoon in Savannah, Georgia, Lorraine Johnson-Coleman was asked to speak to a group of students about African American heritage. She held her audience spellbound with tales of family, community, and traditions taken from her own experience. A sharing occurred that started Johnson-Coleman on a mission that would come to encompass her life.

A popular lecturer and workshop leader, she has worked with some of our country's most prestigious organizations, including the 1996 Olympics, the Association of African American Museums, the Southeastern Museums Association, African American Heritage Preservation, the National Park Service, the Aspen Writers' Conference, and the National Writing Project.

She currently makes her home in Greenville, North Carolina, not far from her ancestral home of Farmville. She and her husband, Lance, are the cofounders of the consulting firm Shantytown, Inc., and the proud parents of four small children."
