The book begins slowly but imaginatively as the child describes his room as his special place. He then describes the changes being made to accommodate the new baby, and the special place within his room that his parents have created just for him. Disgusted with the attention the new baby is getting, he resorts to his secret retreatuntil, finally, the day comes when he becomes protective and shares this space with his toddler brother. The illustrations are clear and colorful, in a combination of muted tones and primary colors, adding to the book's quiet appeal. Stencil-like corner decorations appear on many of the bordered pages. The subject matter of the new baby is very much in demand, and this book can take its place along with the others, such as Hoban's Baby Sister for Frances (Harper, 1964) and Fred Rogers's The New Baby (Putnam, 1985) for exploring young children's fears about new siblings.
