Reviews

So many gardens, so little time! This has to be the lament of any garden aficionado when perusing guidebooks like these. Comparable to Everitt Miller and Jay Cohen's excellent The American Garden Guidebook East ( LJ 7/87) and The American Garden Guidebook West (Evans, dist. by National Bk. Network, 1989), these first two volumes present gardens of the Northeast and West Coast, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. Each book--in a handy size for easy traveling--is arranged in an easily accessible two-part format. In the first section, the gardens are presented by state with a map of each state provided. Brief essays outline each garden's history and describe its major features. The second section offers practical travel details, including coded visitor information (brochures, parking, picnic facilities, restaurants, gift shops, guided tours, visitors' centers, memberships, courses), directions, hours, admission fees, wheelchair access, and special features. The beautiful color photographs, not often seen in guidebooks of this type, are a special highlight. No one guide can cover every garden open to the public, but these are excellent additions to the genre.
