Grade 3-6-- Paladino does a remarkable job of introducing an unusual topic. She notes that when one thinks of rare and endangered animals, those in the wild usually come to mind. However, such is not always the case. Over half of all farm animals exist in such small numbers that they could soon become extinct. She discusses eight such animals whose existence is threatened: the Dutch Belted cow, Gloucester Old Spot pig, Guinea hog, Navajo-Churro sheep, American Mammoth jackstock, Ancona and Black Australorp chickens, and the American Bashkir Curly horse. Each of the four-page chapters is illustrated with bright, engaging full-color photographs. Wide margins frame the photos and the text, which briefly describes each animal and gives a short history of the breed. The narrative concludes with a listing of 78 endangered farm animals. For simple, informative pleasure reading, this title is, in itself, a rare breed. --Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS
