Diana Pushkin is smart but would rather be one of the "Sexies." Alas, she and her friends consider themselves "definitely not sexy."

I was so pleased that this book was chosen as an ALA Book for Reluctant Readers. From School Library Journal:
Grade 8-10-- Freshman Diana Pushkin thinks that Beechurst High is divided into two types of kids: the "Dumb Sexies" and the "Smart Creeps." Since Diana gets straight A's and is short, overweight, and immature looking, she dreads being included with the "Smart Creeps," who are "Definitely Not Sexy," and so she tries to create a new image for herself. Imitating Julie Paris, a Madonna-like rock star, gets Diana lots of attention, especially when the kids who've seen her impersonation start spreading the rumor that she must be "high" on drugs to act that way. So Diana perpetuates the druggie label, without actually becoming one. She fantasizes about love, mostly when she's at the movies, and she's instantly attracted to new kid Jimmy for his mature look and experience with college women. Diana asks him to teach her about sex, as much as he can without destroying her virginity, and then afterwards, she's scared to death about her reputation. Gradually Diana's wise friend Heidi's advice begins to sink in: movie stars are not what they seem, and sex might be something you should save for someone you really love. Kids might like this novel because Diana is funny and has fears and anxieties with which young teens struggle. However, readers are told again and again how smart Diana is, so it's hard to believe that she could do so many foolish things. She's a one-dimensional character; Sutton tells more about her than she reveals through the story. There's much here to titillate, some street language, an obscene phone call, some sex, but there's very little to recommend the story. --Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, Tex.
