Grade 4-6?Beginning with statistics of the 1993 devastation in the Midwest, Vogel delves briefly into the history of the Mississippi River and explains how and why levees were developed, and how they can be overpowered by a river. She continues with more causes and effects of the flood, and tells how a variety of people helped combat the waters. Through both words and full-color photographs, the book describes the battles from city to city as each struggled to contain the Mississippi or its tributaries. The author notes both financial and personal losses when the waters finally receded and cleanup began. She stresses that major floodplain management and restoration of the wetlands around the Mississippi can prevent such disasters in the future, and her views are insightful and well founded. Compared to Karin Badt's The Mississippi Flood of 1993 (Childrens, 1994), Vogel outlines, with a less personal slant, more of what happened, how, and why. Good-quality photos and maps support the clear, concise text that flows through each stage of the disaster. A definite choice over Badt's title, The Great Midwest Flood will be useful for reports.?Charlyn Lyons, Wichita Public Library, KS

Gr. 4^-8. Vogel captures the drama and tension of the summer of 1993 when the Mississippi River basin was flooded to record levels. Readers will appreciate her analogy that "while an earthquake does its damage in seconds . . . the great flood of 1993 was a slow-motion disaster," wreaking havoc for months. Full-color photographs document damage to the land and the efforts of citizens to save their homes and towns. Vogel's writing style is concise but lively, and she includes interesting bits of information that readers may never have considered: how to deal with the frogs, snakes, and worms that invaded water-logged homes; with the scum, sand, and dangerous debris that littered farm fields and city streets; and with shortages of cleaning supplies. She concludes with a brief discussion of floodplain management control measures. A wonderful addition to school and public library collections. Chris Sherman
