Grade 4-10 Sixteen relatively short ghost stories from the British Isles that show the selector's ear for tellable language and relish of blood-thirsty images. The gore will surely please most children. Perhaps the best example of this is the description of Black Annis, a witch: ``Her face was blue and her teeth were sharp and she ate people. She only came out at night and then you could hear her grinding her teeth when she was miles away.'' The layout is extremely attractive. Each spread features a distinctly different set of unusual taupe-and-white illustrations that border the text. While each chapter shows a similar design, the detail of each picture evokes a different mood. The art alone would distinguish this volume from an ordinary book of ghost stories; fortunately, the tales are good, too. Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, Calif.
