Freddie is scared of the dark. His house swarms with goblins, ogres, zombies and things. There's a Troll in the hall, a Cardigan Zombie in the bottom drawer, and a creature lurking under the plughole. And in the garden lives the worst monster of all - the Googeyman himself.

Grade 3-5-- To the strains of his mother's nightly TV soap, fearful Freddie--age nine--is banished to bed in the darkened part of the house, which he knows to be inhabited by monsters and zombies. When an older cousin, 11-year-old Penelope, bounds into his life for a visit, he finds an ally who is equipped with an emergency tackle box of useful items to combat goblins of all sorts, and who astounds Freddie with tales of her own monster-mother. Their series of nightly adventures wiping out the goblins is described in wonderfully funny scenes, and Freddie's warnings of the Googyman (who taps at windows and wants his skin) begin to scare even Penelope. The only monster actually seen (providing a lapse in the logic, but a terrific episode) is the Cardigan Zombie, who is unraveled along with the sweater it is devouring and reknit into a blanket. Sprinkled with zany illustrations showing cleverly skewed perspectives and offbeat characters, the book marks its Australian author's American debut. --Ruth M. McConnell, San Antonio Public Library
