Zoey Passmore's eyes roved from the stove to the dishwasher to the juicer and finally lit on the fridge, where they studied the mess of family photos and outdated invitations. For a moment they lingered on a picture taken at graduation of Lucas Cabral holding her tightly in his arms, grinning straight into the camera. The camera had captured the precise quality of boyish candor that Zoey always admired in Lucas.

Or almost always. It was half an hour past the time Lucas had solemnly promised he'd call. Zoey's cowboy boots tapped against the stool. With a sigh of exasperation she leaped up and marched smartly past the hall phone to the mirror. She flung her dark blond hair back and surveyed herself in the glass. Yes, it was the same Zoey who only weeks before had been a mere high-school student. It was the same girl who'd been---ugh---voted Homecoming Queen runner-up. It was the same Zoey who Lucas had held in a loving grip in the photo on the fridge. Her deep blue eyes narrowed. She looked pretty good, staring fiercely at herself just now. The same Zoey.

"So why isn't that dork calling?" She swung from the mirror and faced the phone, glaring. What am I thinking, Zoey wondered. That if I stare long enough at myself in the mirror, I'll make Lucas materialize?

The sun was just peering over the clouds as Zoey slammed the door behind her and made her way up the little slope to the Cabrals'. Summer, always slow to arrive in Maine, was making a halting appearance. She felt the sun's comforting warmth on her bare arms and breathed a sigh of relief. Surely she was mistaken. She must have misunderstood Lucas when he said he would call to arrange a meeting place later that afternoon. It had been so long since they'd really hung out, especially alone. After his father's illness, Lucas had been obliged to work long hours on the fishing boat, but even Lucas's hard work and dedication wasn't enough to make up for the money lost from his father's absence. Lucas had had little time or energy left for anything when he got home from work. Zoey felt a pang of guilt as she reached the Cabrals' front door. Did she really have any right to complain or pester Lucas at a time like this?

Her question was answered momentarily. Before she had even knocked, the door of the house opened and Zoey found herself staring into the hard, stern face of Mr. Cabral.

"Lucas isn't here."

"Oh-oh, Mr. Cabral, I'm sorry. . . ." Zoey was flustered. Mr. Cabral was even gruffer than usual.

"He's out on the boat. And if you're thinking of waiting around for him to get back, I wouldn't. That kid's got a lot of work to do. You'd best find yourself another playmate, young lady."

Zoey swallowed. Mr. Cabral was always a bit short with her---sometimes, she imagined, because he didn't approve of the amount of energy Lucas gave to a girl instead of schoolwork or athletics---but this was unusual. She backed down the stairs. She could feel her face growing hot.

"I'm sorry, I---I---I---I was just expecting, I mean. . ." She bit her lip. "It's just that he said he'd call and he hasn't and I was worried. He's very reliable.... Can you---"

Mr. Cabral cut her off. "Did you hear what I just said, young lady? The boy is working. He'll be working like this all summer, and so don't you go waiting around for any phone calls. And don't you be distracting him. The boy's got a duty to his family right now, and he doesn't need distractions." With that Mr. Cabral shut the door firmly in Zoey's face.

For a moment she stared straight ahead, as if she were still trying to register Mr. Cabral's words. Then her stomach dropped, and she could feel tears forming. She turned and ran back to the house, her face red with the sting of humiliation. Mr. Cabral barely listened to her! And he probably wouldn't have believed that Lucas was supposed to call even if he had listened.

Back at her house, it was all she could do to keep from sobbing as she dialed Nina Geiger's number.

"Nina?" Zoey was relieved that her friend picked up the phone and not Nina's sister, Claire, who Zoey didn't entirely trust.

"Zoey? Are you okay? You sound weird. What---did you catch a cold from too much fun on the treadmill?"

Zoey and Nina---at Nina's urging---had found summer work at a trendy gym in Weymouth. Zoey, needless to say, had outlasted Nina, who'd quit in a fit of frustration, disgusted with the too-perfect clientele showing off their sculpted bodies.

"Nina, this is serious. Nina. . ."

"Zo, are you crying?"

There was a sniffle at the end of the line.

"Zoey?"

"I'm okay, I'm okay ... oh, Nina, it's just ... it's just ... oh, God, here I go."

Zoey felt the sobs welling up in her throat.

Nina was silent for a moment, waiting, then she said softly, "Zoey, this isn't like you. What happened? Don't worry---you can cry---I'm not gonna say something stupid. Hey, it's not that terrible PMS that's going around, is it?"

Zoey giggled through her tears. Nina could always be counted on to lift the gloomiest of moods with a joke.
