Motion is snail-like (adj or snail-slow (adj if very slow indeed. Actually the common snail has been estimated to move at an average rate of a mile in a fortnight.
The striking of a clock is controlled by a part called a snail, or snail-wheel (ii), which has a spiral shape somewhat like that of a snail's shell when viewed from above. The sections are successively farther from the centre on which it turns, and its shape decides the number of strokes.
