The waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea were pivotal to the development of the nothernmost areas of Queensland, with shipping being the only practical form of exploration and transport until relatively modern times. However, ancient seafarers from Asia had previous experience of this perilous and often hostile environment, as had the earliest of the European colonial navigators from Portugal. Spain and Holland. It was not until 1770 when Cook explored the coast, almost losing his ship Endeavour when it grounded on the Barrier Reef, that detrailed records and mapping began. In this fine nautical history Holthouse takes the story of the area up to the1970s, recording many of the more notable of the estimated 1000 shipwrecks that occured in the Reef, Coral Sea and Torres Straits. Early seafarers, faced not only the extremes of weather that caused many a shipwreck but also hostile natives who took an additional toll of those who survived the loss of their ships, as well as exposure, starvation and other privations. In 23 chapters the author recalls not only shipwrecks and other tragedies but stories of the pearl divers, traders, explorers, adventurers, survivors and the sailors who supplied the settlers, miners and traders along the northern Queensland and the Cape York coasts and Torres Straint. Bligh's epic small boat voyage after the Bounty mutiny and of heroic deeds of endurance and courage by shipwreck victims are among the episodes recounted. There are many tragic aspects too in what is an engrossing history of these island-dotted tropical northern waters and those who sailed them.
