Graham Rust is the world's premier decorative muralist -- a man whose stunning trompe l'oeil paintings grace the walls of dozens of stylish homes in Europe and America. This stunning stylebook showcases the best of his work -- from dramatic entryway scenes to rustic paintings for the bedroom -- and brings to life the many delights of decorating with murals. Lavishly illustrated with more than 250 color photographs, The Painted House includes projects for every home, from small chimney boards and folding screens to spectacular full-room scenic paintings. For anyone interested in interior design at its most fanciful and amazing, this book -- back in print at last, in an affordable paperback edition -- will be a revelation.

Graham Rust is internationally renowned for his murals and ceiling paintings, which can be found in houses in Britain, Europe, and America.
His drawings and paintings have been widely exhibited and special collections have been used as book illustrations, notably for editions of The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and Little Lord Fauntleroy, all by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Examples of his painting also appear in Some Flowers by Vita Sackville-West, The Fine Art of Dining (Bulfinch, 1995), and Decorative Designs (Bulfinch, 1996).
Beautifully designed and illustrated, and accompanied by a concise text, this book offers a curiously limited but enticing glimpse of the possibilities of interior wall painting. Rust, an English muralist, has compiled reproductions of over 100 of his murals designed for a variety of spaces, complete with handsome watercolor sketches illustrating the development of each design. His work, while masterfully executed, is largely derivative, relying on the art of antiquity and a trompe l'oeil painting technique. Most of the murals depicted are grand and fantastical and aspire to an old-world luxuriance better suited to hotel and restaurant walls than the average home, but contain details easily adapted to the needs of humbler spaces. Only a small portion of the volume is devoted to actual painting technique and practice. This is clearly not a do-it-yourself book; only an experienced painter could realize a mural based on information gleaned from the text. As a designer's sourcebook, it is limited by the homogeneity of Rust's own style, but offers valuable information on design considerations and conveys a refreshingly magical eccentricity.
