Seventeen-year-old Pippa is one of the many dancers in the Corps de Ballet chosen to go on an Italian tour. In Venice, Pippa catches the eye of Nicolo, a young gondolier. With poignancy and perception, Godden makes Pippa's unforseen awakening to a more grown-up, complex world, vividly alive--where innocence can so easily be corrupted and new surroundings and experiences dazzle and contort with their intensity.

About the Author:

Rumer Godden is the author of many much-loved books for both children and adults. These include The Diddakoi (winner of the Whitbread award for children's books), A Kindle of Kittens, Four Dolls, and Great Grandfather's House. She lives in England.

Jones is a former editor of Black Enterprise magazine. She is a freelance writer.

From AudioFile:

Pippa Fane is a young British ballerina who is touring with her company in Venice. She has a bittersweet romance with a young gondolier and a disturbing interlude with her ballet mistress. The melodious and youthful voice of Patricia Jones is the perfect vehicle for this story. Her presentation brings warmth to a lovely young woman; she also portrays a scheming older woman and a manipulative Italian man with style and distinction. Since there's little action, but much in the mind of the main character, an excellent story is turned into an enjoyable audio experience through Jones's performance. S.G.B.
