The Abbess Heloise is usually associated with her husband and mentor Abelard, but these fifteen specially commissioned essays assert that Heloise's writings should be judged in her own right. Focusing on `Heloise as a compelling intellectual figure and a daring writer', the contributors examine Heloise's position as a powerful monastic leader and place her career and her letters within the context of France during the first half of the 12th century. Specific subjects include the controversy surrounding the authorship of the letters, the character and temperament of Heloise that emerges from her writings, the nature of her relationship with Abelard, her philosophical and rhetorical skill, her spirituality and her place among other medieval intellectual and religious women.
