Hilary McKay won the Guardian Children's Award with her first novel, The Exiles. Her subsequent work has achieved similar recognition - The Exiles at Home won the Smarties Prize and the Dog Friday trilogy was critically acclaimed. A graduate of Botany and Zoology from St Andrews University, Hilary now writes full-time. She lives in Derbyshire with her husband and two children.
Hilary McKay's strength lies in her understanding of young people and her ability to evoke them very simply.' * THE GUARDIAN * THE EXILES 'This most engaging comedy of manners ... a delight.' * TES * THE EXILES 'an inventive romp from a writer with a sparky future.' * THE BOOKSELLER * ZOO IN THE ATTIC 'Irresistable fun, excellent writing.' * JAN MARK, CAROUSEL * THE TREASURE IN THE GARDEN / THE ZOO IN THE ATTIC 'The events are entirely plausible, yet there is excitement in what happens because the children do not anticipate it. The characterisation is especially good. The children are well differentiated, and their parents too are individualised. * JUNIOR BOOKSHELF * THE TREASURE IN THE GARDEN 'a funny, intriguing story of children.. Tony kenyon's illustrations enter into the spirit of it all.' * CHURCH TIMES *
