9780340735107: Landmarks of Britain: The Five Hundred Places That Made Our History

Landmarks of Britain is the history of the nation, told through the places where it actually happened. Each of the landmarks that Clive Aslet describes tells the story of a great event or figure, and the effect is a sweeping panorama of history, encompassing battlefields, cathedrals, palaces, and places linked with great events in the worlds of science, literature, architecture, religion, espionage, sport, agriculture, and industry. Sites include those associated with the discovery of vaccination and penicillin, the splitting of the atom, the writing of the Messiah, Paradise Lost, and On the Origin of Species, the coinage of the phrase "Anno Domini" and of the equals sign, the smashing of the four-minute mile, and the landing places of the rats that brought the Black Death.

Review:

'This is no conventional gazetteer, nor is it a guide book. It is a charming, erudite, amusing and very personal list ... His energy, enthusiasm and learning, always lightly worn, are prodigious ... Delightful' -- David Dimbleby, The Spectator 'A brilliant, far-ranging enterprise ...literally a monumental work: all those who care about history in the first place should acquire it' -- Antonia Fraser, Sunday Times 'A grand and panoramic sweep through our island story' -- Sunday Telegraph 'A labour of love ... a book to map your travels by' -- Daily Mail 'A first-rate, oblique examination of British history that no household or car glove compartment should be without' -- House & Garden 'This book only goes to prove what a creative, war-like, eccentric, inventive lot we are - and three cheers for it' -- The Lady
