Richard A Jonas MD was named the William E Ladd Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 1994. In 2004 he became Co-director of the Children's National Heart Institute in Washington DC.

Detailed surgical knowledge is imparted effortlessly in every chapter of this beautifully illustrated book. For training cardiac surgeons this book explains the subject more clearly than any other I have read...For paediatric cardiologists, perfusionists and intensivists this could be invaluable in promoting greater understanding of the conditions they are involved in treating, and understanding the surgeons' perspective.

The most difficult technical procedures are described with accuracy, in simple terms that reflect the skills and talents of a masterful surgeon. The accompanying text follows the diagrams in a logical, sequential fashion. The diagrams are such that it is relatively straightforward to envisage the surgical repair during an actual procedure. The book would be invaluable on a Congenital Heart Surgeon's bookshelf and also to Trainees in Cardiac Surgery and others involved in the management of children with congenital heart lesions.

This book represents a concise overview of the current surgical approach to many congenital heart lesions. I feel it represents excellent value. It is perhaps worth remarking that I bought this book myself before the copy arrived for review.
