From the Author:

This was not the book I intended to write. Writing can be funny that way. Back in 1981, I was writing an unrelated novel about an archeological investigation of a cylindrical world inside an abandoned McNeil colony. One engineer, a minor character in the story, kept appearing on stage, kept saving the day, kept vying for my attention, kept coming to life. Though only in her twenties, she had an arthritic hand. Her features were oriental. A prominent white streak wound through her reddish hair.

I became fed up with her machinations. "All right, already," I said.

"What's your story?"

"Well," Ellia said, "It's about time you asked! I'm from the Emeraline Island, a rustic country on the other side of the sea, where women aren't allowed to have jobs and have to do everything their men say. When I was young, the menfolk wouldn't let me ride horses or go to school, but I was too smart for that. I ran away a lot. I passed myself off as a boy to get some of what men earned simply by being male, and rarely appreciated. To save the life of a friend, who had found out I was a girl but didn't tell, I passed myself off as a boy again to take the manhood test all boys were required to take. I braved an ancient terror and risked death to learn the darkest secret of the Emeraline Island. That's where I got my scars, my crippled hand, the streak in my hair. Would you like to know what the secret was?"

I told her I would.

I wrote Ellia's story.

The late Judy Lynn Del Rey, the Del Rey whose name appeared on the Ballantine Del Rey SF imprint, was so excited by the story, she bought it herself. It was my first novel. The book sold well, and people have been reluctant to part with their copies. To this day, I still encounter strangers who have read the story and remember it well.

The best reward for writing this novel, however, was one particular fan. She read the book, and made the effort to meet the author. She said a person who could write this book was type of partner for which she was searching. We've been together since 1984. The Girl from the Emeraline Island has spoken to the heart of many people. Will it speak to yours next?

From the Back Cover:

"About sixteen, the boy was already a good swordsman, a natural horseman, and a wrangler of his school's cattle herds. Unfortunately, "he" was very much a she. In Earth's provincial culture, after the interstellar war, women were to marry young, bear sons -- and obey their husbands. But Ellia Kellzi was tough, smart, and fast -- and nobody was going to stand between her and independence.

"At the Stone Coast, she learned to ride like the wind and fight like a man. In the great Open city, she won the trust of two of the People, wolflike humanoids from a land across the sea. And in the dreaded Blasted Hills, she faced madness, terror, and even death to learn the most terrible secret of the Emeraline Island."
