When an Argentine math student discovers the smothered body of his landlady, conventional wisdom points to a family member with the most prosaic of motives. But then renowned logician Arthur Seldom, author of a book on the mathematics of serial killers, tells of a strange note left in his mailbox. The note indicates that the murder is the first in a series linked by a mysterious pattern. Each new death is accompanied by a different mathematical shape. It seems that the serial killer can be stopped only if someone can crack the next symbol in the sequence. The leading Oxford logician and the math graduate team up on a quest to crack the cryptic clues.

About the Author:

Guillermo Martinez is the author of several highly acclaimed novels and short story collections. His bestseller The Oxford Murders was made into a film in 2008. He lives in Buenos Aires.

From AudioFile:

An Argentine graduate student at Oxford stumbles upon a series of murders linked to a mathematical code. He seeks to solve the puzzle with one of his professors, a renowned logician and the author of a book on the mathematics of serial killers. Despite some references to Fermat's Last Theorem, even the "math-phobic" should have no problem enjoying this cerebral whodunit. Narrator Jonathan Davis shines as Professor Arthur Seldom, characterizing him with a melodious Scots brogue. Davis's embodiment of the professor drives the narrative, which is also helped by careful differentiation of the other characters. Especially splendid is Davis's rendition of a lively Irish nurse, who also happens to be the love interest of the young South American narrator. Book Description Little, Brown Book Group, United Kingdom, 2006. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. On a balmy summer's day in Oxford an old lady who once helped decipher the Enigma Code is killed. After receiving a cryptic anonymous note containing only the address and the symbol of a circle, Arthur Seldom, a leading mathematician, arrives to find the body. Then follow more murders - an elderly man on a life-support machine is found dead with needle marks in this throat; the percussionist of an orchestra at a concert at Blenheim Palace dies before the audience's very eyes - seemingly unconnected except for notes appearing in the maths department, for the attention of Seldom. Why is he being targeted as the recipient of these coded messages? All he can conjecture is that it might relate to his latest book, an unexpected bestseller about serial killers and the parallels between investigations into their crimes and certain mathematical theorems. It is left to Seldom and a postgraduate mathematics student to work out the key to the series of symbols before the killer strikes again. Seller Inventory # HUK9780349117232
