PreSchool-Grade 1 When a hungry fox threatens Mama Duck's nest, she lures him far away, unaware that in the meantime her egg has hatched and her little duckling, Quack-Quack, is searching for her. Each animal he meets tries to describe Mama Duck: ``She has feathers,'' says Mama Frog, and Quack-Quack is led to Owl, who indeed has feathers, but. . . . ``Your mother has white feathers and an orange beak,'' says Owl, but that description only leads Quack-Quack to Swanand so on. Finally he goes into the bamboo where Mama Duck was last seen and is almost caught by the fox before Mama rescues him. The crayon and pencil drawings are lovely, the animals expressively portrayed, and youngsters will respond both to the cumulative (if a bit stilted) dialogue and to Quack-Quack's predicament. One quibble: ducks usually do not lay a single egg, but rather as many as a dozen at a time. Reminiscent of Eastman's Are You My Mother? (Random, 1960), this will have much the same appeal. Mama Duck wants to protect her baby, soon to be hatched from its shell, so she teases Fox into following her away from the nest. Alas, while she is gone, Quack-Quack emerges from his shell, and, upon seeing Little Frog, says, "Hello, Mommy!" Thus begins a duckling identity crisis and a search for Mama through woods and marsh. Quack-Quack meets Foxbut Mama swoops past just in time. "I'll never leave you again," says she. It's a delightfully reassuring outcome, thanks in no small part to the duck-baby's new friends. Stehr's pictures show a yellow Quack-Quack, first dejected with droopy wings and a bewildered look on his face and later triumphantly taunting Fox from a safe aerial vantage point. Ages 3-up.
