PreSchool-Grade 2-- "Every night Jay was told that if he didn't go right to sleep the Sandman would come." One night Jay decides to stay up and see if the Sandman is real. Before long, a large man wearing blue jeans and work boots appears at the foot of his bed, greeting Jay with a large wheelbarrow full of sand. He dumps all of the sand onto the bed where they wallow in it, building castles and strategically placing Jay's toys all around. He reads Jay a story, feeds him a snack, sings him a lullaby, and they count sheep together. Just then, the Sandman hears someone coming, and he vanishes. It's morning. Shepperson has woven a frolicsome, amusing story that will attract young readers who have ever wondered about the Sandman. His watercolor illustrations hold much depth and perspective, catching Jay's bedroom and the Sandman at all sorts of odd and interesting angles. They don't, however, show Jay falling asleep, which may cause children to wonder if Jay's adventures were meant to be a dream. Still, the wide-eyed, large-toothed characters offer a haven of fun as they sweep themselves grandly across the page. Bright, deep colors add to the gaiety. A good read-aloud choice for preschoolers.

"Washed ashore after a shipwreck, two brothers are left to fend for themselves in New York," said PW . "Yorinks's droll storytelling talents are perfectly matched by Egielski's broadly theatrical paintings. The roller-coaster series of events abounds with ironic humor in this stylish and satisfying work." All ages.
