A of love and lust set in a small Midwest American town.

From Publishers Weekly:

When a traveling strip-show plays the fairgrounds in a small Ohio town, the show's hardboiled creep of a manager starts an affair with a country-club matron, and longstanding marriages, values and friendships are suddenly threatened by unbridled lust and passion. That's the basis for this overheated potboiler with pretensions as a Peyton Place for the '80s. Goldman, novelist ( Myself as Witness ) and screenwriter ( The Lion in Winter ), peoples this trashy, tumescent roadshow with an 18-year-old runaway virgin stripper, a cuckolded car salesman, a rebellious Ohioan turned New York actress, randy teenagers, a matriarch, a sheriff and assorted townies. While the interactions between the locals and the erotic troupe seem contrived, if nothing else, the story illustrates that oral sex while driving a car is dangerous. Other diversions include lesbian sex between strippers, a beating-cum-incest, public masturbation. In the hands of more sympathetic or believable characters, these unzippings might arouse more interest. Literary Guild alternate; major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal:

Passion is the key in Fulton County. But in this inconspicuous town, it takes more than passion to shake things up; it takes the bawdy characters of a traveling striptease sideshow--come to town with an end-of-summer fair--to turn life upside down. For Marcie Van Buren, life in Fulton is uneventful, until she meets up with the strip show's barker, Talker. Their lusty relationship takes Marcie through many stages of development--first, sexual gratification; then, self-awareness. The affair is complicated by a series of side relationships, but eventually Marcie comes to terms with what's good in her shaky marriage, while Talker wants something he has never wanted before--commitment. Although the characters lack depth, the story keeps a rapid pace; unfortunately it goes in no particular direction. Goldman is author of the play and screenplay A Lion in Winter as well as other screenplays. Literary Guild alternate.
