Typical high-school freshmen Marsha, Clarrissa, and Sara form a self-improvement club designed to enhance their figures, appearance, personalities, and social lives, but their plans have unexpected results

Grade 7-9 Marsha, Clarissa, and Sara are unpopular and hounded by ever-popular and nasty Doris and Heather. To improve their chances for popularity, the three form ``The Makeover Club.'' The girls diet, exercise, and experiment with hairstyles and makeup. Clarissa, the jock, even decides to enter the Teen Today magazine's model search. The three girls do have some adventures, but most are too ridiculous for most readers to accept. They bleach Sara's hair, deliberately ignore the directions, and are surprised to find that her hair has turned green. When Clarissa wins the magazine contest, her father refuses to let her go to accept her prize in a plot twist so stupid that no reader could believe it. The lack of character development makes it hard to tell the three main characters apart, and parents and minor figures are flat and stereotypical. Although each girl has a talent, she hates it and wishes only for a boyfriend and beauty. All is neatly resolved in the last 15 pages, when each girl gets a boyfriend and recognizes how special she is. This book will not hold the interest of even an avid teen romance reader. Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, Mo.
