Jo's determination to become a published author makes her long for the simple responsibilities of her sisters. But when things don't go as planned, her temper drives her to make Meg, Beth, and Amy the villainesses in her book. She regrets her hasty move even as her fondest dream is about to come true.

Charlotte Emerson has loved Little Women since she was a child. She lives in New York.
Grade 4-7-Based on Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, each of the books in this series features one of the four March girls. This story is told from 15-year-old Jo's point of view. Because she is exhausted from her late-night writing sessions, her family encourages her to stay home and rest, but everything goes wrong. Her attempts at housework fail and her babysitting charges end up in tears. Later, her sisters tease her about her bad day and Jo concludes that they planned it to spite her. To relieve her anger, she casts her siblings as the villains in her new story. When she finds out that the tale is to be published, she is stricken with guilt and worry over her sisters' reaction. A pleasant, although rather slight story, this does manage to maintain much of the tone and spirit of the original work. The voices ring true and Little Women fans will easily recognize all of the personalities. However, occasional bits of introspection, especially in Jo's discussions with her mother about her feelings, seem a bit too modern. Also, the pacing is slow at times. Black-and-white drawings appear throughout. This is by no means a necessary purchase, but it may find a willing audience among Alcott's fans. Its accessibility may even generate interest in readers not yet acquainted with the classic.
