Grade 4-6 Twelve-year-old Flee Jay Saylor fancies herself a "girl detective" in the tradition of Nancy Drew, but it is her younger sister Clarice, the genius of the family, who solves the mystery. The two sisters are traveling alone by night ferry across Lake Michigan when it becomes clear that an escaped convict is also on board. A search by the ferry's crew has turned up nothing, and Flee Jay would dearly love to discover his hiding place. This is a light, enjoyable mystery that gives a fair amount of clues and suspects, as well as an assortment of illustrations and diagrams. The relationship between the sisters is believable, and the story is involving enough to keep readers interested. Elizabeth Mellett, Brookline Public Library, Mass.
