Thomas McKean has lived in various parts of the world, including the United States, Europe, and Africa, working mostly as a teacher. He currently lives in New York. From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7?Jellimiah John Jensen hates his name. It has been the number one cause of the teasing he receives at school. So when his mother informs him that they will be moving from Los Angeles to New York, the boy sees it as a chance to start seventh grade with a new identity. He convinces the secretary at his old school to take the name Jellimiah off of his transcripts but, in error, two sets of records are sent to New York. The principal at Edgewood Junior High thinks that Jellimiah and John are two different people?identical twins, in fact. The boy decides to play along; Jellimiah establishes himself as the cool brother, while John is seen as the geek. For the next two weeks he (they?) alternates good and evil personae, with each one making up more totally unbelievable excuses as to why the other brother isn't around. Readers will identify with the protagonist's struggle to gain the confidence to be himself. Eventually, he learns that it is more important to have friends whom you enjoy rather than those who are popular. The book's weakness lies in the fact that the principal and the teachers are mean, insensitive, and manipulative. They berate students in front of the entire class. The math teacher/football coach gives good grades to the football players so that they can remain on the team. Overall, readers will enjoy the fact that it is up to a seventh grader to show the adults the errors of their ways. A good choice for reluctant readers.?Michele Snyder, Chappaqua Public Library, NY
