PreSchool-Grade 1?Sombala Bombala Rombala Roh, an iguana, plants a mango seed and eventually the fruit grows so big that she can't pull it from the tree. Other animals with equally irritating names try to help, until a bat bites through the stem and the fruit falls to the ground. The writing is filled with repeated patterns and sound effects that probably work in oral storytelling but don't translate well in print. Rather than evoking Caribbean rhythms or sounding playful, it's just annoying and jarring. The watercolor illustrations are flat and unattractive, an odd mix of heavily drawn, static animals and delicate renderings of flowers. An unsuccessful mix.?Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY
