At the expense of his health, the strolling Glerp swallows everyone who gets in his way

Ages 2-8. A gray glob of a snaillike creature, a glerp eats anything--"Glerp!" When setting out on a walk one night, the glerp says "If anything gets in my way, I'll eat it!" Then the glerp gobbles an ant, a mouse, a dog with a bone, a lion, and a purple cow. Growing bloated and going green about the mouth from all the animals bouncing around inside it, the glerp begins to feel a bit ill but resolutely continues walking. Finally, when the glerp tries to swallow an elephant and the tusks get caught in its throat, the glerp coughs out all the animals. They have had such a wonderful time that they ask the glerp to give them another ride when it gets well. The pen-and-watercolor illustrations printed on glossy pages are boldly exuberent and delightfully convey the rollicking nonsense of this silly and satisfying story. The glerp will gladden the hearts of any child who has ever longed for such a digestive display of power. Buy multiple copies because kids will swallow the book whole--"Glerp!" Annie AyresFrom School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1?In spite of its whimsical artwork, this is an insipid, uninviting tale. The Glerp, a gray blob, eats anything in its path. One night, it goes for a walk and, in turn, swallows (whole) an ant, a mouse, a dog, and a lion. The Glerp feels progressively sicker, and the animals can be seen happily dancing and jumping around inside. The creature continues its compulsive behavior, swallowing a cow and an elephant, whose tusks get stuck in its throat, causing the Glerp to cough up all the animals. They ask it to repeat its actions when it feels better and it replies "Glerp." The ink-and-watercolor cartoons, set against a solid black background, are original and charming but do not carry the story. Cynthia Jameson's The Clay Pot Boy (Coward, 1973; o.p.) is a more clever choice.?Barbara Peklo Abrahams, Oneida City Schools, Manlius, NY
