There is an abundance of recently published books on Australia from which to make selections. This series entry focuses more on the country's history, geography, and contemporary life and less on its unusual wildlife and natural resources than some of the other available titles. Particularly interesting is the discussion of Australia's role in the two World Wars and the Vietnam War. While Dolce points out the many unique and positive aspects of Australian life, she also discusses the mistakes of its past and current and future problems, including treatment of the Aborigines, declining economic productivity, and the discriminatory immigration policies that were in effect until the 1950s. Although there are ample black-and-white photographs, many are too small to be effective. The small section of color photographs are merely decorative, offering postcard scenes of beautiful skylines, sailboats, and bucolic farms and ranches.
