Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam was written anonymously in the 11th century by a poet who was known in his time as a highly skilled mathematician. Edward Fitzgerald translated the work anonymously in 1859 supplying the English-speaking world with an adaptation rather than a strict translation of Omar Khayyam's poem. But not until Rosetti discovered Fitzgerald's translation in 1860 did the work start on its way to becoming the traditional, most popular and often-quoted translation of this now famous work.
