Grade 3-7 Another sure-fire success in a popular series. Ames once again combines a simple step-by-step approach with a popular subject for young artists. He demonstrates how to develop a finished drawing of sports cars, classic cars, racers, bicycles, motorcycles, and trucks, using a series of simple lines. The limitation, of course, is that this technique involves no actual observation of the vehicle or individuality in presentation. Ames defends his approach in a note to the parent or teacher, contending that "mimicry is prerequisite for developing creativity" and that the success factor of his technique will stimulate the child to go beyond his approach. Many will not agree, but there's no doubt that children continue to demand and enjoy his books. Eleanor K. MacDonald, Palos Verdes Library District, Calif.
