Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Montresor is an incredible artist, bringing visual magic to everything his sense of form and color touches. This book is no exception. Glowing pastels on scratchboard, the stylized cartoons have life and humor all their own. They are not enough, however. His story, a dream in fluent and graphic enough prose, has some potential, but it falls apart. In brief: the king of Venice and his queen have no son to inherit the throne. Wise men offer no hope. Fairies promise a flower child, but the king knows better and throws the potted plant out the window. The sun nurtures the plant, and a boy springs from it. Despite what his eyes tell him, the king denies the child and imprisons him in the garden. The wind and a pigeon on wheels rescue the boy, who flies to a witches' ball and rescues a flower-plant girl from a dragon and the witches. The revelers are turned upside down by the wind, which carries the boy and girl away in a mechanical bird, while the king insists, "I saw nothing." If only Montresor had told his dream to someone who can do with words what he can do with pictures. --Helen Gregory, Grosse Pointe Public Library, MI
