Archie's negative feelings about camp change after he catches a fish.

Grade 1-3-- A reluctant Archie is sent off to camp with his mother's assurance that it will be fun, but he is miserable. The turning point for him is catching a bat in his tent and becoming a hero. He catches the biggest fish and when the other children feel homesick and cry, he is just fine. Delton uses understatement and humor to get off a few good quips. The overall impression, however, is of one whining, self-centered kid whom anyone would like to pack off to camp. That the book would be reassuring is doubtful, given its negative emphasis, even though Archie eventually begins to enjoy himself. The circumstances leading to his change of attitude seem contrived. Also, while he shares a tent with children of both genders and varied race, the stereotype of the strong male/weak female is presented during the bat chase. McCue's illustrations ably depict the action, but her children bear a bit of a resemblence to the Campbell's soup kids. A book that may be a bit too cute for all concerned. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library
