Muscle toning and the reduction of stress and other discomforts of pregnancy are the aims of these two very different books. Artal outlines a program of exercises that are similar to those in Femmy DeLyser's Jane Fonda's New Pregnancy Workout and Total Birth Program ( LJ 10/1/89), but he also addresses the concerns of women who have been accustomed to very strenuous workouts before becoming pregnant. He suggests modifications that permit a woman to maintain her fitness level without danger. Unlike DeLyser, he does not discuss choosing a doctor or preparing older children for a new baby. He is concerned strictly with exercise. Stillerman presents a program of massage for mother (as well as father and baby), with emphasis on techniques that can ease discomfort during pregnancy and help the body to heal during the postpartum period. She includes diagrams of reflexology points for specific problems and also suggests herbal teas and treatments for them. Neither of these books is an essential purchase, but both would be useful for public libraries needing such materials.
