PreSchool-K-- All in all, this is an attractive compilation of 64 rhymes that range from familiar Mother Goose and traditional folk rhymes to more obscure selections, but there are several flaws. First, the layout is somewhat jumbled. Multiple rhymes with their instructions and illustrations are scattered across each spread; the loose groupings contribute to a feeling that there is too much going on. Secondly, the helpful hints on the actions are incomplete or unclear. While that could provide an opportunity for creative interpretation for some children, it could also prove frustrating for those searching for traditional moves. Finally, there is no table of contents or index. The illustrations capture a lively group of ethnically diverse children who are soft, cuddly, and colored in bright watercolor washes with pencil outlines and textures. They're an appealing batch of plump babies and toddlers performing all sorts of pertinent activities with the appropriate phrases. Marc Brown's Play Rhymes (1987) and Finger Rhymes (1980, both Dutton), Hayes's Stamp Your Feet (Lothrop, 1988), or Cole's Eentsy, Weentsy Spider (Morrow, 1991) are much stronger additions. --Marian Rutsch, formerly at New York Pub.
