Reviews

Grade 3-5-Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown only needs to ask one question to solve a problem. His dad, who is chief of police, can always depend on him. The 10 crimes here range from bullies taking totem poles to safe cracking to kidnapping and more. Encyclopedia's solutions are listed in the back of the book. This newest addition to the lengthy series is a good choice for critical thinkers or for getting children to start problem-solving.

Gr. 3^-6. Although he's been updated--he's sporting jeans and a work shirt on the dust jacket--Encyclopedia Brown is still Idaville's number-one brain and crime stopper. (Idaville's been updated, too. It's got a deli and a synagogue.) What hasn't changed are the short, entertaining mysteries, and their ability to keep kids guessing. This time out, Encyclopedia uses wordplay to figure out a safe's combination, one of the presidents to catch a forger, and a wallet full of money to prove that a thief was blind. As usual, a good and fun workout for the brain. Pencil illustrations pepper the text. Ilene Cooper
