Ages 4^-6. Arnold may be a fox, but he's a kind caretaker to the chicks on the farm. At Christmastime one of the treats Arnold plans is playing the Big Bad Wolf with the chicks and three little pigs. But Arnold isn't very scary, so he makes a wolf mask that adds a bit of wolfish panache. Over at the real wolves' house, they'd like a chicken for Christmas dinner. So they get into costume, too, but they dress up as Santa Claus and two of the reindeer. When the Santa/wolf who has captured a chicken meets the Arnold/wolf, the fur flies, and not surprisingly, Arnold comes out on top. The plotting is not always crisp, but the watercolor-and-pen artwork is both slapstick and sly. A jolly addition for larger collections. Ilene Cooper
