Reviews

Gr 3-6-The seventh installment in the series about the feuding boys and girls of Buckman, WV, takes place during spring vacation, when the Bensons, who have traded houses with the Malloys for a year, return to town for a visit. The five Benson brothers stay with their friends the Hatfords. For Caroline Malloy and her two sisters, it has been an eventful and fun year thinking up dastardly deeds and stunts to pull on the four Hatford brothers. Now, adventures really roll as the boys devise a ghostly trick to pull on the girls, who know how to retaliate. Readers will wish they could have this much fun with their neighbors and friends. There is even a hint of romance, and a cougar on the loose. As with the previous books, this title can stand alone, although they are more fun read consecutively.

It's the Hatfords versus the Malloys (again) in Newbery-winner Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's The Boys Return. This time it's spring break and the Hatford boys team up with the Benson brothers to plan a ruthless prank against the sisters, schemers in their own right.

Gr. 4-6. The good-natured practical joke war between the Hatford and Benson boys and Malloy girls continues in this seventh book of the series. At the novel's opening, the Hatfords are concocting a plan to make the Malloy girls believe that they're being haunted by a ghost, but a little research reveals the truth. At the same time, the cougar, which appeared in A Spy among the Girls (2000), is still stalking their West Virginia town. The boys and girls decide to join forces to capture the cat, but plans go dangerously awry. Fortunately, the police and fire departments intervene, and the kids are declared heroes. The list of characters at the front of the book helps keep the principal players straight. Another funny installment in this sweet-natured series. Todd Morning
