PreSchool-Grade 2-- A bright, fresh collection of 44 rhymes set to music. There is a multitude of nursery songbooks that already crowd library shelves, ranging from the traditional, such as Wheeler's Sing Mother Goose (Dutton, 1945; o.p.); to the newer and more simplistic The Mother Goose Songbook (Outlet, 1986), arranged by Carol Barratt; to the popular, although overdone, Sharon, Lois & Bram's Mother Goose (Atlantic Monthly Pr, 1986). Glazer's book, however, differs from these and many others in several important ways. His is a straightforward presentation of rhymes and music. There are no directions for fingerplays or rhymes without music. Some of the selections are original. Many of the traditional words and music have a new arrangement to them. But, above all, this is a celebration of Mother Goose without any gimmicks or apologies. The arrangements are intelligent and loaded with personality, but they are not difficult to play. McPhail's witty watercolor illustrations complement each song and add new life to the standard characters instead of being weighed down by them. A collection that will be used and enjoyed again and again in schools, library programs, or at home. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY
