While writing a story for "Newsweek" on a school for bodyguards, Jesse James is joined by her mother and her mother's new husband, Charlie, but when Charlie disappears, Jesse must change from stringer to sleuth

From Kirkus Reviews:

The fourth (and first hardcover) outing, primarily MacGuffin- hunting, for Rochester, New York, investigative reporter Jessica ``Jesse'' James finds her doubting everyone around her-- particularly Mafioso lover Marcus, who may be reconciling with his wife; but also her new love interest, handsome pilot Mac Devlin, who gets into violent shoving matches with a man he claims not to know; and her mom's new husband, Charlie, who's spent the last 20 years covering his tracks--but why? When Charlie disappears, and then her mother, and when eavesdropping reveals that Charlie, Mac, and the man he claims not to know seem to be up to something, Jesse enlists Marcus's security chief, the independent-thinking Tark, to tail them all, a task that leads to a farmhouse owned--surprise--by Marcus himself. Several deaths, drug-smuggling complications, and leaps in logic later, Jesse has her mom back, still isn't sure whether Charlie's a good guy or not, and is undecided about which of two marriage proposals to accept--if either. An appealing, self-deprecating heroine, upscale mobsters, and adventurous mom, plus saucy writing, add to the fun here--and are almost enough to make you forget that the plot doesn't make much sense. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. From Publishers Weekly:

Rochester, N.Y., reporter Jessica James returns (after Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow ) in this disappointing tale, which centers mostly on her personal life. After flunking a course for executive bodyguards, which she took in order to research an article, Jess meets--and is attracted to--pilot Mac Devlin, one of the instructors, at a bar and overhears an argument he has with Sam Garner, another pilot, over an unnamed woman. Distressed to learn that her sometime lover, mobster Marcus Andrelli, is in Europe with his ex-wife and son, Jess takes up Mac's offer to teach her to fly. Then her mother, Kate, visits with her new husband, Charlie, whom Jess thinks is a crook. Mac, Sam, Kate and Charlie hold a clandestine meeting at one of Marcus's properties, but they refuse to tell Jess what is going on. O'Brien manages to bring these disparate parts of her plot together, but Jess's reliance on Marcus's right-hand man Tark for information will disappoint fans who expect this feisty heroine to take charge of situations by herself.
